   Weather  in Baja California

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

09AM MDT 09/29/07 Tropical Depression 14E (magenta arrow) has formed well to our south. The system is expected to become Tropical Storm Juliette later today as the storm wanders harmlessly off into the Pacific. We have two tropical waves on our map (orange arrows) One is too far west to concern us and the second is just entering the basin. The eastern wave is broad and we will be keeping an eye on it as it moves west and interacts with mainland coastal thunderstorms (yellow arrow) mid next week.. Baja California will begin the day with some clouds associated with a Low moving east in the SW US. Baja Sur should enjoy clear skies and slightly cooler temps today.

Tropical Storm Ivo Fades as it Moves toward Resort areas of Baja California Sur

   Weather  in Baja California

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

09PM MDT 09/21/07 Tropical Storm Ivo (red arrow) is slowly turning toward Baja California Sur and is now about 267 miles SW of Cabo San Lucas. Ivo is expected to be reduced to a depression when it passes through La Paz mid day Monday. Those in Baja Sur should expect periods of rain becoming heavy at times beginning as early as Saturday. Spin-off moisture is already causing cloudiness that thins as you move north that is being circulated by a Low (blue arrow) off the California Coast. There is one additional tropical wave on our map, finding little moisture to stimulate at this time.

Hurricane Ivo Takes Aim at Baja California Sur

Hurricane Ivo Heads for Baja California Sur

Information on Hurricane Ivo direct from Baja California Sur

09AM MDT 09/20/07 Ivo continues to strengthen and is now a Hurricane Category 1 status some 440 miles south southwest of Cabo San Lucas. The current estimated position is 17.1N 112.8 and movement is 330° at 6kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 987Mb and winds are 65kts with gusts to 80kts. Hurricane Ivo is now forecast to continue strengthening through Friday, then begin got diminish before making landfall in Baja Sur Monday morning. Tropical storm force winds extend out as much as 60 miles and hurricane force winds only 15 miles from the eye.

Send a link to this page to a friend

The 9AM forecast calls for the storm to intensify, accelerated and curved it back slightly to the north. The outside end of a five day forecast now calls for a tropical storm to pass just north of La Paz sometime late Monday or early Tuesday. Cabo San Lucas may begin seeing cloud cover from spin-off of Hurricane Ivo later today.

As with Hurricane Henriette this may prove far more the blessing than the threat. If current forecasts hold true a more subdued storm will bring additional rain early next week.

Hurricane Ivo is forecast continue turning to the north  today and bend further around to the NE on Friday. The lower 1/2 of Baja Sur now falls within the five day forecast cone of possibility. By turning to the NE sooner than originally forecast, Ivo will intensify to hurricane strength sooner and remain over warmer water longer. Ivo could still be a hurricane when making landfall in Baja Sur and will certainly have opportunity to regain strength as it move toward the mainland over +28°C waters.

Ivo became a hurricane in the 9PM report from the NHC on 09/19. Tropical Storm Ivo evolved from TD12E in the 9PM release from the National Hurricane Center in 9/18. Tropical Depression 12E formed about 670 miles south by southeast of Cabo San Lucas and was declared a tropical depression at 11AM on 09/18/07..

We will continue to monitor the progress of this system over the next few days. The best we could hope for is for the system to weaken to a depression before making landfall in Baja Sur and deliver more much needed rain.

Ivo is currently forecast to be a tropical storm when arriving in Baja California Sur. The is one additional tropical wave on our map and some thunderstorms south of the Tehuantepec that we will have to watch later this weekend as well. Baja Weather Outlook - Tropical Storm Ivo

09AM MDT 09/19/07 While Tropical Storm Ivo churns towards us, Baja will enjoy bright sunny skies and seasonal temperatures. Tropical Storm Ivo (red arrow) is about 530 miles south of Cabo San Lucas moving NW. Forecasts call for Ivo to make a 100° turn and move in the direction of Baja Sur late in the weekend. SW portions of Baja may see rain late Monday or Tuesday if the forecast hold true. TS Ivo has a lot of distance to cover and turns to make before coming a threat to Baja Sur. There is one new tropical wave entering our map (orange arrow) and some thunderstorms in the Tehuantepec that could be a factor in 24-48 hours.

Tropical Storm Ivo Heads for Baja California Sur
Information on Tropical Storm Ivo

09AM MDT 09/19/07 Tropical Storm Ivo continues to gather strength as it move NW some 530 miles south of Cabo San Lucas. The current estimated position is15.3N 111.1W and movement is 300° at 11kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 994Mb and winds are 55kts with gusts to 65kts. Tropical storm Ivo is gathering strength faster than originally forecast and is now expected to become a hurricane later today.
The 9AM forecast now anticipates that Ivo may curve so much by Monday as to miss Cabo San Lucas to the south as a Tropical Storm.
Tropical Storm Ivo is forecast to turn to the north by Friday then move northeast toward Baja Sur. Ivo will continue to be over very warm waters through Thursday and strengthening beyond the forecast for that period is possible. However, should Ivo continue on the projected course, it would have to pass over marginally warm waters and it is unlikely that strengthening would continue during along that path.
Tropical Storm Ivo evolved from TD12E in the 9PM release from the National Hurricane Center in 9/18. Tropical Depression 12E formed about 670 miles south by southeast of Cabo San Lucas and was declared a tropical depression at 11AM on 09/18/07..

Tropical Depression 12E 3PM MDT 09/18/07

Information on Tropical Depression 12E
03PM MDT 09/18/07 Tropical Depression 12E continues to strengthen as it moves NW about 635 miles south by southeast of Cabo San Lucas. The current estimated position is 13.8N 108.4W and movement is 295° at 10kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 1006Mb and winds are 30kts with gusts to 40kts.
TD12E is originating in an area usually considered too far away from the mainland and too far south to be a threat to Baja Sur. However, current forecasts call for the storm to turn to the NE over the weekend and head in the direction of Baja Sur at the end of the five day forecast. The system is currently forecast to become a Tropical Storm on Wednesday and begin turning dramatically more northward on Thursday. Turns against the rotational direction of a tropical cyclone usually reduce the intensity of the storm. However, once the system completes the turn in the direction of Baja Sur it will still be over water warm enough to support regeneration. Forecasts for the system do not extend beyond five days and this is very early in the storms formation. If current forecast models do hold true this system would not effect Baja weather until early next week.

Baja Weather Outlook - Tropical Depression 12E

   Weather  in Baja California

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

03PM MDT 09/18/07  Baja will enjoy another late summer evening of clear skies, warm temps and perhaps a little drier. Down south we now have Tropical Depression 12E (red arrow) The system is expected to become a tropical storm as early as later tonight as it heads NW. We will have to keep an eye on this one as it is expected to button-hook and head back toward Baja on over the weekend as a Depression. This is early in this storms genesis, so it's hard to forecast too far in advance. There are three tropical waves (orange arrows) on our map the western most moving out of our basin, the middle stimulating TD12E and the eastern most just entering our map.

Tropical Depression 12E Forms south of Baja California Sur

Information on Tropical Depression 12E
11AM MDT 09/18/07 Tropical Depression 12E has formed about 670 miles south by southeast of Cabo San Lucas. The current estimated position is 13.4N 107.9N and movement is 290° at 11kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 1007Mb and winds are 25kts with gusts to 35kts.
We will continue to monitor the progress of this system over the next few days.

Baja California Weather Outlook - Tropical Depression 12E

   Weather  in Baja California

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

11AM MDT 09/18/07  Baja will enjoy another late summer day of clear skies, warm temps and perhaps a little drier. Down south we now have Tropical Depression 12E (magenta arrow) The system is expected to become a tropical storm tomorrow as it heads NW. we will have to keep an eye on this one as it is expected to button-hook and head back toward Baja on Saturday as a Depression. This is early in this storms genesis, so it's hard to forecast too far in advance. Another system (yellow arrow) is causing a broad band of thunderstorms but is not expected to develop further.

Earthquakes Rattle Windows & Nerves in Baja California Sur
09/17/07 Recently a series of earthquakes, including a 4.1 on Sunday, 9/16, have been felt in Baja California Sur. The strongest earthquake of this series was a 6.1 magnitude quake on Sept 1.
Earthquakes are not new to Baja. The Sea of Cortez itself was formed by an earthquake beginning about 45 million years ago during the Eocene era. Along the bottom of the Sea of Cortez lies the fault which separates two major plates. Where this separation of plates passes through California it is known as the San Andres Fault. A significant number of small tremors are produced along this area as the eastern plate slides NNW and the plate upon which Baja resides remains stationary or shifts to the SSE. More..

06PM MDT 09/16/07  The Dia de la Independencia (Sept 16) weekend is wrapping up. Lots of fiestas around Mexico and a grand celebration here in La Paz last night. Baja will enjoy mostly clear skies top to bottom today but there are a few thunderstorms (green arrow) popping up along the mainland that may drift west over the evening hours. Down south there are two tropical waves (orange arrow) both stimulating broad areas of Low pressure. The western most is showing limited signs of development (yellow arrow) while the eastern more of the two (magenta arrow) has some potential for development as it moves WNW over the next several days.

Baja California Weather Outlook

   Weather  in Baja California

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

10AM MDT 09/14/07  This weekend is Dia de la Independencia (Sept 16) and many businesses, federal and state offices and banks will be on different schedules from mid day today until Tuesday. Parades, dances and other fiesta events will be held throughout the weekend. This is one of Mexico's grandest holidays. Baja will have clear skies today top to bottom Down south we have a Low that is dissipating and some of the stray clouds may float over Baja Sur this afternoon. There are two tropical waves on our map (orange arrows) the western most is stimulating an area of thunderstorms and has some potential for development, but it is too far south and west to be of much concern to us. The other wave is stimulating an area of thunderstorms south of Guatemala. The NHC gives this a marginal chance of development, but we will be keeping an eye on it through the weekend.

There is another thermal Low over mainland Mexico (yellow arrow) we have one Tropical Wave on our map (orange arrow) that is stimulating some thunderstorms (magenta arrow) that has some potential for development. Another Low (green arrow) has some potential for development, but both systems pose little threat to Baja Sur. The area to watch is near the southern coast of mainland Mexico (red arrow) This is where many of our later season storms are formed. A tropical wave will move through this area in the next 48-72hrs. We ill be keeping an eye on this area of disturbed weather.

Baja California Weather Outlook

   Weather  in Baja California

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

10AM MDT 09/11/07  We have a new SST underlay today and the 26°C thermo cline has migrated north to near it's maximum, near Turtle Bay on the Pacific side. Our weather map is quiet today, with just two tropical waves (orange arrows) on our map. The western wave is stimulating some thunderstorms (green arrow) and has some potential for development, but is too far west already to concern Baja. A tropical Low (yellow arrow) is dissipating and is not likely to be stimulated by the eastern most wave. Baja Sur will have partly cloudy skies and potential for afternoon thunderstorms. We have already had some light drizzle in La Paz this morning. The deserts, just one week after Henriette is already turning very green!

Baja California Weather Outlook

   Weather  in Baja California

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

09AM MDT 09/10/07  A High (blue arrow) about 400 miles west of the Cedros Islands will bring down our humidity, provide cooler evenings and perhaps slightly lower than seasonal highs throughout Baja today. A Trof (magenta arrow) is moving west around the High but should have little effect on our weather. We have two tropical waves on our map (orange arrows) and only some scattered thunderstorms (green arrow) near the Mainland coast. A Low (yellow arrow) is stirring up some thunderstorms a little further west, this system may develop further when the next tropical wave catches up with it. However, by that point it should be too far west to concern us. The NHC doesn't currently predict any tropical cyclone formation in the next 72hrs.

Baja California Weather Outlook

   Baja California Weather Outlook

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

10AM MDT 09/08/07  Life is almost back to normal in Baja Sur following the passage of Henriette. The remains of Hurricane Felix (magenta arrow) now just a Low, is stirring up some thunderstorms and the system may regenerate some, but winds above 25-30kts are not expected. The system is moving NE and may bring rain to East Cape and northward, into the Sea in the next 24hrs. A High (blue arrow) has developed west of central Baja and will keep our skies clear and dry outside the threat of rain from the Low. There are three tropical waves on the map, but none are forecast to develop further.

Weather in Baja California & Almost Back to Normal After Henriette

Weather  in Baja California & Almost Back to Normal After Henriette

Surface Chart / Satellite IR

09AM MDT 09/07/07  A bright sunny day from north to south in Baja today as many of us do the final tidying up following Henriette. Hwy 1 is open north to south with minor problems - see Baja Road Report. There is a new 1016mb High (blue arrow) west of west of the Cedros Islands. There are three tropical waves on our map (orange arrows) but there is only one area of disturbed weather, (yellow arrow) the remnants of Hurricane Felix, that offer any chance of development, and the NHC is calling that unlikely. Enjoy a beautiful day through most of Baja as most places complete the mop-up following the passage of Henriette. We will post additional video from San Jose del Cabo and La Paz later today.

Contrary to major press reports, we're all doing just fine here in Baja Sur. We have a little mopping up to do, but we are certainly not "devastated" by a little weather, as CNN & Fox might lead you to believe. Click here for more facts about Henriette... Surface Chart / Satellite IR

09AM MDT 09/04/07  Hurricane Henriette (red arrow) is just 50 miles away from Cabo San Lucas. Hurricane Warning exist for Baja Sur from Mag Bay to Loreto including Los Cabos. Hurricane force winds may be expected in the southern most reaches of Baja very shortly. Hurricane preparations elsewhere in Baja Sur should be rushed to completion. Henriette is expected to enter the Sea of Cortez through the Bahia de La Paz and make landfall again on the Mexican mainland. We have two tropical waves on our map (orange arrows) but there is little left in our basin following the passage of Henriette. Cat 4 Hurricane Felix (magenta arrow) can be seen on the east edge of the map.

Look on the bright side folks! We need the rain, the desert will be just beautiful in about 2 weeks and the day after a hurricane is almost always a bright beautiful day. This storm is a quick mover - hopefully it will be over before you know it! Stay sane and stay safe!

Hurricane Henriette
Hurricane Henrietta come to bahia de Cabo San Lucas 8:11 am 9/04/07-

Port is closed to all but emergencies for the entire day.

Having had steady rains all night and intermittent heavy gusts Henrietta is definitely on its way here. Nothing too bad as of yet but beware the streets will be flooding some in Los Cabos today. Do not drive unless absolutely necessary.

Gusts up to 35kts approx and heavy rain at sunrise with more to come. Have had intermittent loss of power but all seems okay for now. Sea State very rough with waves increasing. Please be careful near coast and when driving if necessary. Many areas of Cabo are already beginning to flood. This is nothing new and does not mean the storm is at all catastrophic at this time. Cabo has always been susceptible to flooding even in moderate rains.

I will post more as Henrietta comes closer as long as I have power and net connection. Take care and stay dry!

Los cabos weaher, ? Hurricane Henrietta
Cabo San Lucas Baja, tropical storm Henrietta is beging to show herself a little as the winds have begun to increas again and the rain has been a steady soaking rain for the last hour or so.

Shore winds have long lulls between realtively (20kts max) winds. If rain increases be asured there will be the usual flooding problems. Many times in these hurricanes you will find some of the greatest damage by rains on land the sea surge for marinas and costal areas.

People be safe and do not move around alot unless really necessary and drive a 4X4, or a car with higher clearance if you can. Be safe and well report more in the latter morning.
