Tropical Storm Kiko to Pass Harmlessly South of Baja California Sur Weather in Baja California |
09AM MDT 10/22/07 Tropical Storm Kiko (magenta arrow) is now about 250 miles SSE of Cabo San Lucas and moving west by northwest. The forecasts call for TS Kiko to continue to weaken throughout the forecast period and pass about 200 miles south of Cabo San Lucas tonight. A cluster of strong Highs off our map to the north (blue arrow) are providing us with compressed isobars (yellow arrow) on the east side of The Sea. Opposed to the lower tropical pressures there is a difference of 30Mb. The Sea will have winds to 25kts today from the NE and waves will build to 6' in the southern Sea. Temperatures in Baja California will be below normal in the upper 60's to low 70's while Baja Sur will have winds and seasonal temperatures. A storm is developing in the Tehuantepec but is not expected to develop cyclonic action. Baja Sur experienced another small quake over the weekend. A 4.0 magnitude quake struck near El Triunfo at 9:48AM local time Sunday. . |

09AM MDT 10/20/07 Tropical Storm Kiko (red arrow) is now about 400 miles SE of Cabo San Lucas and moving NE. The storm is forecast to attain hurricane intensity later today and pass just south of Cabo San Lucas on Monday. A High (blue arrow) over mainland Mexico and Kiko will interact to build winds to 20kts from the NE shifting to the NW over the next 36hrs. Seas will build to 6' in the southern Sea. On the Pacific side waves will run 13' in the north to 9' in the south. A cold front will push into California over the weekend and bring grey skies and rain to Baja California. We expect the Baja Sur will enjoy mostly sunny skies through the weekend, except the extreme southern portions will develop cloudy skies as Kiko approaches.

Tropical Storm Kiko Turns to Threaten Baja California Sur Weather in Baja California |
09PM MDT 10/18/07 Tropical Storm Kiko (magenta arrow) continues to amaze forecasters and now the predicted storm track has a strong Category 1 Hurricane passing just south of Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday. Kiko will remain over very warm water through the 4 day forecast period and is expected to strengthen to become the most powerful tropical cyclone to threaten Baja this season. However, intensity and track forecasts for Kiko have literally been 'all over the map' so we will be following the progress of this storm through the weekend. Baja Sur could certainly use more rain, but overnight low temps and the drop of humidity in the last two weeks would seem to preclude a tropical cyclone landfall. Previously, the latest tropical cyclone to make landfall in Baja was TS Olivia which made landfall on Oct 13, 1967 |

Tropical Storm Kiko Churns North Toward Baja California Sur Weather in Baja California |
09AM MDT 10/17/07 Tropical Storm Kiko (magenta arrow) is wandering NNE some 550 miles south of Cabo San Lucas. Intensity forecasts now indicate the storm will increase in intensity some, but fall short of hurricane status. The system is forecast to move just north of the Socorro Islands by Monday. It remains unlikely that Baja will receive more than overcast or light showers should the storm move in our direction. The air mass over Baja Sur is now too cold and too dry to support cyclonic activity. Off the Pacific coast our isobars (yellow arrow) are stacking up and winds should increase in that region from the WNW. We have one tropical wave on our chart (orange arrow) which may catch up with Kiko by this weekend. Upper level winds are increasing (note blurred cloud tops) and may end Kiko sooner than expected. |

Beautiful Late Summer Weather in Baja California Weather in Baja California |
09AM MDT 10/11/07 Our typical early fall weather map, virtually arrow free! We have one system down south, an area of thunderstorms moving SW from Cabo Corrientes. Some development of this is possible over the next few days but it is unlikely to threaten Baja. Baja will enjoy clear skies, top to bottom and seasonably warm temps, upper 90°'s in the south and mid to upper 70°'s in Baja California upper reaches. By mid next week forecasts call for a 5-8 degree F temperature drop - a welcome fall in Baja Sur. |

La Paz Gold Cup Fishing Tournament Set Records in Baja California SurLa Paz, BCS
The La Paz Gold Cup Marlin tournament that was held on October 4-7th was the largest and most successful fishing tournament in the history of La Paz. Seventy nine boats competed for more than $150,000 in prize money, and the winning fish of 395 pounds caught by angler Mark Ryor of Buena Vista was only five pounds short of him winning a brand new Ford Lobo truck. He did manage to walk away with a check for $100,000 USD.
The billfish action was fast and furious with more than 14 qualifying fish being caught. Second place winner Jesus Castro rushed to the weigh station by 11 am with a Blue Marlin of 343 pounds, and he took home $35,000 for his effort. The smile on his face as he held up his winning check was priceless.
Third place honors was won by veteran angler, Ray Novelli aboard his classy 73 foot Buddy Davis yacht fisher Rama III. Ray graciously donated his winning check back to the Ortesis Prosthetic Center that was organization that will receive the proceeds from this event.
There was a dramatic finish to the tourney as tournament control received a radio message from a boat just before the lines out of water signal, saying that they were on their way back to the weigh station with a fish that they said would weigh in an more than 500 pounds. A crowd of more than 100 people waited for more than two hours anticipating the arrival of what everyone believed would be the tournament winning fish. As the boat approached the weigh in station and the fish was hauled to the scale, it was apparent to veteran marlin anglers that the fish was not going to be over 500 pounds, and they were correct, it weighed in at 277 pounds and did not place in the money at all.
On Sunday evening, the La Paz Gold Cup finished off with a classy awards banquet held on the beach at Marina Costa Baja Resort. More than 500 people showed up to enjoy the fine cuisine prepared by Dennis Catering of Los Cabos, on a picture perfect evening in La Paz.
One of the highlights of the party was an exciting auction of many items donated by local businesses. Jeffrey Curtiss of Playa de La Paz donated a brand new smart car, which was purchased by his friend Ray Novelli.
Chris Snell of Snell Real Estate who was one of the major sponsors of the event, was in attendance with his friends and family, and not only did he offer for auction a sunset cruise on his personal yacht, but also rounds of golf at Palmilla. Chris not only donated generously, but also purchased many items from the auction as well.
The Master of Ceremonies, Robert Hefner the developer of La Concha Pearl Condominiums in La Paz, and James Curtiss of The Cortez Club, kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening, and did a remarkable job keeping the action moving at a fast pace.
The tournament, raffle, auction and other fund raising portions of the event will benefit the Balandra Rotary Club’s prostheses clinic and was the result of a collaboration between major developers in La Paz including Bahia de Los Suenos, CostaBaja Resort & Marina, La Concha Pearl, Maravia Country Club Estates, Playa de La Paz, Snell Real Estate
The La Paz Gold Cup 2007 was the largest and most successful fishing tournament in La Paz history, and judging from the initial success it will certainly be one of the featured events every year in southern Baja.
