Earthquakes Rattle Windows & Nerves in Baja California Sur
09/17/07 Recently a series of earthquakes, including a 4.1 on Sunday, 9/16, have been felt in Baja California Sur. The strongest earthquake of this series was a 6.1 magnitude quake on Sept 1.
Earthquakes are not new to Baja. The Sea of Cortez itself was formed by an earthquake beginning about 45 million years ago during the Eocene era. Along the bottom of the Sea of Cortez lies the fault which separates two major plates. Where this separation of plates passes through California it is known as the San Andres Fault. A significant number of small tremors are produced along this area as the eastern plate slides NNW and the plate upon which Baja resides remains stationary or shifts to the SSE. More..
