Yuma Sun : Mexican officials discuss Punta Colonet port
Chinese and South Korean interests are looking to build a megaport in Punta Colonet, Baja California Mexico. The super port would bring more than 1 million tons of freight from the orient to Baja and some jobs for locals. Unforunately, most of the work would be of a skill level not available in the Baja labor pool. The port would require a rail system to bve built, while in the interim subjecting Baja's Hwy 1 to traffic loads beyond it's capacity.
Finally and most importantly, the proposed port would ruin some of the beautiful coastal areas in Baja so that shippers can avoid costly union labor in California.
Do we need more plastic yard gnomes and inflatable Santa Clauses on motorcycles for Christmas? I think not at the expense of this remaining slice of Baja coastline. We encourage the Mexican authorities to reject this attempt to export Southern California problems to Mexico.
