Sea Turtles Need Your Help!
Sea Turtles Need Your Help!
Spring is a time to celebrate life and renewal. Unfortunately, the first weeks of spring present a grave challenge for sea turtles. During the 40 days of Lent from February to April, and closing with the celebrations of Holy Week, many devout Catholics abstain from eating red meat. Because sea turtles live in the ocean, many view them as "fish" and a substitute for "red" meat, and regularly consume sea turtle meat and eggs during holy days. Throughout Latin America, an estimated 10'000 sea turtles are consumed every year during religious holidays.
Sea turtles need your help now more than ever: support Pro Peninsula and the Grupo Tortuguero's efforts to save sea turtles, and spread the word that these magnificent creatures are in danger of extinction.
* Support our outreach and research initiatives in communities on the Baja California peninsula by adopting <http://www.propeninsula.org/adopt> one of our sea turtles today! The money you donate will directly support our efforts to reduce consumption in communities throughout the peninsula.

* Send a Letter to the Vatican <http://www.propeninsula.org/campaign/1/5.html> : Our bilingual campaign to create awareness in the Vatican about the issue of sea turtle consumption during Lent and Holy Week has already generated close to 300 letters in the past week. Help us get to 500 letters by the end of Holy Week! Send a message to the Pope and the Vatican that sea turtles need their help; they can help us clarify the misunderstanding that sea turtles are fish and let Catholics worldwide know that they are not not acceptable food during holy days or any other time.
With your help, we can give sea turtles reason to celebrate this spring.
P.S. Spread the word, send this announcement <http://www.propeninsula.org/email_this/1/0/2/5.html> to your friends and family!
